Dr. Goldstein is Director of Data Analytics, Quality Improvement and Research in the Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs.  She is a geriatrician and health services researcher. Before joining GEC in late May 2020, Dr. Goldstein served as the Chief of Medical Service at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. In that role, she led a large and vibrant service that fulfills the VA missions of clinical care, research, and education. Medical Service provides clinical care in medical subspecialties (including cardiology), inpatient acute medicine and medical consult, primary care, emergency care, women’s health, and community outreach, with more than 200,000 encounters in FY17. The Service plays a major part in educational programs of Stanford University including the internal medicine residency program and multiple subspecialty fellowship programs. It also includes extensive research programs.

Dr. Goldstein served as Director of the Palo Alto Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) from 2008 to 2017, and as Associate Director for Clinical Service (AD/C) before that. Dr. Goldstein retained a close affiliation with Palo Alto GRECC during her time as Medical Service Chief, collaborating and consulting with GRECC in work advancing care programs for older Veterans.

Dr. Goldstein’s own research focuses on quality improvement in health care through improved medical decision making and patient-centered approaches to care. Her research team develops and implements clinical decision support (CDS) for health professionals that takes account of multiple co-existing conditions that many older adults may have (ATHENA-CDS system). Dr. Goldstein is currently working closely with Dr. Paul Heidenreich in the VA HSR&D QUERI Medication Safety center, in which one project focuses on implementing CDS for PACTs. In the past FLAIR project (Functional Limitations And Independence Research), her research team developed interactive multimedia software and used it to interview more than 1,000 older adults to understand how they rate the quality of life of health states such as functional dependency in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). In addition to leading her own research projects, Dr. Goldstein performs collaborative research with other investigators at VA Palo Alto. Recent collaborative projects include: study of care fragmentation, led by Donna Zulman, MD; study of reducing anxiety and improving functioning in older Veterans, let by Christine Gould, PhD; and personalized life expectancy to encourage high value prostate cancer care, led by John Leppert, MD. Over many years at VA Palo Alto, Dr. Goldstein has collaborated with a number of other investigators in projects involving CDS, clinical decision-making, patient preference, and multimorbidity.

Dr. Goldstein received her undergraduate degree, majoring in philosophy, from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City, and her medical degree from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University. She completed her residency at Duke University, and fellowship at Stanford University. She has served on many committees and boards, including the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society, and the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Physician Faculty Scholars Program.

Dr. Goldstein was the 2010 recipient of the Department of Veterans Affairs Undersecretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research, awarded “For exceptional leadership and enduring dedication to health services research as a scientist, colleague, teacher, and mentor.”

She has also mentored a number of research fellows in health services research and in medical informatics, as well as mentoring junior faculty on career development awards.

Dr. Goldstein has published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal papers as well as book chapters and reviews. She holds a faculty appointment as Professor of Medicine in the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research (PCOR), and Professor of Health Policy (by courtesy), at Stanford University.
